Dismissed!

Let go from work today – just about 90 minutes ago. Was just told things weren’t working out, and the boss didn’t have anything else to say to me after he told me that. What brought this about? Well, I never understood my job, and did it wrong more often that I did it right. I got to the point where I was scared to work on things, which obviously greatly hampered my ability to perform well and hurt my chances of ever understanding the job and doing it right. When the boss days to respond to emails on projects that I was behind on or didn’t respond at all, I pretty much knew it was about the happen. I couldn’t work the way the group I was assigned to worked, and I failed to figure out how to get the help I needed to learn the job correctly within the framework of how others in the group worked.

I’m trying to be careful, because I don’t want to blame my employer. I feel a little shafted, because I never got the support I needed to do the job right. But still, I know responsibility for doing the job ultimately was up to me. I clearly didn’t ask enough questions, or ask the right people, when I was lost and struggling with understanding my responsibilities. I have always been one to work on my own to try to figure out problems, even in instances when I need to ask questions. So rather than asking up front for clarification when I was lost, I would read, re-read, and look back at similar work done by others. And ultimately, what I figured out was usually not right.

In the end, it would have been foolish for my previous employer to keep me, because I wasn’t able to do the job they needed. I just wish I could have found one person in the group who could understand how I work and have that one person available to answer my questions and help me in a manner that matched my work style. I tried to work in their way, but failed, and never found someone who worked the way I do.

Eye Candy voting

I haven’t posted a good eye candy picture in a while, so I feel a need to rectify that. However, I can’t quite decide which subject should make my next Eye Candy focus. I’ve just started watching the new Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles show, so I have Summer Glau on my mind (along with many admittedly unclean thoughts). But I also have been watching the revival of American Gladiators with my kids lately, and have to admit a bit of a crush on, ummmm, Crush (shown below out of gladiator gear).

Please let me know what you want to see more of next.

The other 28 minutes

Normally, I prefer to limit my advertisement space on the site to ads that earn a little money for me.  However, I couldn’t pass up the punch line on this one.

My question, after watching this, is how did that guy build up 120 seconds of stamina?  I’m done after about 15, maybe 20.  If you include the begging that counts as foreplay, I’m still only good for 45 to 60 seconds. . .

Another Filipino prisoner dance performance

A little less synced with the song and video than last time around, but I guess there wasn’t a video of hundreds dancing in sync to Hammer’s music.

They sure can dance and handle large-scale choreography, can’t they?  But they need baggier pants to reallllly fully pull off that song.

Earthquake *NOT* caused by global warming?

For a change, global warming is not the root cause of some serious act-of-god type happenings. In this instance, those damns gays are causing earthquakes.

An Israeli parliamentarian said that several earthquakes felt in Israel recently were a consequence of gays and the parliament’s acceptance of them.

. . .

“Why do earthquakes happen? One of the reasons is the things to which the Knesset (parliament) gives legitimacy, to sodomy,” Benizri said during a parliamentary debate on earthquake preparedness.

A cost-effective way of averting earthquake damage, he added, would be to stop “passing legislation on how to encourage homosexual activity in the state of Israel, which anyway brings about earthquakes”.

So there’s the little bonus throw-in that it isn’t just the gays, but the acceptance and apparent promotion of their lifestyle by the Parliament that has caused the recent quakes. It’s encouraging to see that closed-minded thinking is prevalent in more places than just the US.

Typing tracker

Think you can type fast, hot shot? Put your skillz (you know we’re serious, because of the ‘Z’ we use) to the test with the USB typing speed tachometer.

Sure, the seller calls it a USB WPM speedometer, but we’re a bit more advanced here — we know it’s a tachometer of a sort. (via boingboing gadgets)

How to solve Indiana Jones on the Atari 2600

My brother just sent me a link to a SharkBait article which references an old VHS video series from Vestron Video in 1982 that tells you how to beat a variety of Atari 2600 games.  The article has this Raiders of the Lost Ark game guide, and since I remember so well playing the game, I thought I’d put it here so I can always remember how great it was (well, always meaning until YouTube removes the video or shuts down).

If you click on that video and go to the YouTube patch, you’ll find links to other video guides, plus a number of other Atari 2600 game-related videos.  Oddly, when I look there is a link to a “worst games on the 2600” video, which suggests Raiders of the Lost Ark is one of the worst games on the Atari 2600.  The video below that is the video guide for the game Superman, which actually is on my list of worst Atari 2600 games ever.

If you’d like to know more about the Raiders game shown in the video, I highly recommend Atari Age as the source for pretty much all 2600 and other Atari console information.  Click on the little Pac-Man looking icon in the top right corner of the screen to get the ROM, and then get the open source emulator Stella for running it.
