Man dies after week of “marathon” gaming

Folks, if you game a lot (like I sometimes do), make it a point to get up, move away from the computer, and do a little actual physical activity periodically. Look up DVT (Deep Venous Thrombosis) sometime – I recommend Google, but pick your favored search engine.

Now, armed with knowledge about how stupid it is to sit, sit, sit, sit, sit, sit, sit, sit, and sit some more, you can learn how not to sit on your ass for the better part of a week and die from inactivity.

An obese 26-year-old man in northeastern China died after a “marathon” online gaming session over the Lunar New Year holiday, state media said on Wednesday.

The 150-kilogram (330-pound) man from Jinzhou, in Liaoning province, collapsed on Saturday, the last day of the holiday, after spending “almost all” of the seven-day break playing online games, the China Daily said, citing his parents.

. . .

“There are only two options. TV or computer. What else can I do in the holiday as all markets, KTV and cafeterias are shut down?” the paper quoted Xu as saying.

I’m going out on a limb here, but I’m thinking exercise, walk in The Real World outside, visit friends, clean the house, work in the yard, and all kinds of other things count as options, even when all the markets are closed. And doing such crazy things, plus dropping just a few pounds (said as a man who games sometimes too much and is at least 60 pounds overweight, but working on dropping some of that), just might save your life some day. It’s really said to see this happen to people, when this particular form of death is extremely avoidable.

Sure, sure, it’s plenty stupid – but it’s still funny

I’ll agree – this fellow did something that is stupid and uncalled for. I still laugh to think about it, though. I guess I’m just evil like that.

Police say a man sought revenge against his ex-girlfriend by leaving homemade DVDs of her performing sex acts on car windshields throughout the area.

The DVDs include the woman’s name, address and phone number.

Police said the woman never realized the acts had been recorded and has received several visits and phone calls from strangers seeking sex.

It’s funny, because, well, it’s funny. It was a stupid thing to do, however, because he now faces one felony and three misdemeanor charges.

Christmas carols for the disturbed

I’m sure someone will get offended by this. But for everyone else, here is a list of rejected Christmas carol ideas for the disturbed, as sent to me by someone at work:

The key to stopping global warming/global climate change

It turns out that most of us have been wrong in debating whether or not global warming or global climate change is a problem. Regardless of the fact or fiction behind these ideas, the simple fix if there is a problem is to use secret alien technologies that world governments are hiding from us.

A former Canadian defense minister is demanding governments worldwide disclose and use secret alien technologies obtained in alleged UFO crashes to stem climate change, a local paper said Wednesday.

“I would like to see what (alien) technology there might be that could eliminate the burning of fossil fuels within a generation … that could be a way to save our planet,” Paul Hellyer, 83, told the Ottawa Citizen.

Alien spacecrafts would have traveled vast distances to reach Earth, and so must be equipped with advanced propulsion systems or used exceptional fuels, he told the newspaper.

I have an additional theory on global climate issues. If President Bush would stop using his secret weather control machine to cause such extreme weather changes, we would all live better lives. Stop secret weather control experiments Mr. Bush!!! Man, the HTML sarcasm tag doesn’t work right.

How to win the sympathy verdict from a jury

During jury selection, perhaps it would be wise not to do this:

A lawyer who was stabbed by his client during jury selection in the man’s rape trial will be asked to step down from the case.

Superior Court Judge Charles Grabau said Wednesday he will ask attorney John Courtney to withdraw from the trial of Che Sosa, who allegedly stabbed Courtney with a sharp, makeshift weapon made out of Plexiglas Tuesday.

To me, the most surprising thing is that a lawyer would have to be asked to stop representing some scumbag that just stabbed him. But then, he is a lawyer. (via Fark)

A few soldiers give ammo to anti-military idiots

In a news story sure to be used as “proof” that our military members are bad people, we hear of four military men who raped a 14-year-old girl in Iraq and killed her and her parents and younger sister. Rather than focusing on the reality that there are bad people in any large group, expect idiots everywhere to present this as a damnation of the entire US military. It is a disturbing occurance, but this is 4 people in group of well over 100,000 (and yes, I know there are other abuses, but again those are small numbers out of a large deployment).

Cortez, of Barstow, Calif., pleaded guilty this week to four counts of felony murder, rape and conspiracy to rape in a case considered among the worst atrocities by U.S. military personnel in Iraq.

In his plea agreement, he said he conspired with three other soldiers from the Fort Campbell-based 101st Airborne Division to rape 14-year-old Abeer Qassim al-Janabi. The girl, her parents and a younger sister were all killed.

There will be all kinds of speculation for why this happened, but ultimately none of that matters. Theses idiots did something stupid, and the entire US military will be judged for this, likely along with the entire nation. (via Michelle Malkin)

Stupid criminal news

Reuters has this tale of a criminal who didn’t practice due diligence in choosing a target or escape plan.

A would-be thief proved himself lacking in key skills like reconnaissance and driving after he tried to pull a heist beside a police-dog training site and then got stuck in the snow trying to flee.

Police in Edmonton, Alberta, said officers were training with a dog at a business late Tuesday when they heard an alarm sound from the building next door.

Yeah, that was bright.

“How many legislators does it take to change a light bulb?”

By the way, that’s the name of the act: The “How many legislators does it take to change a light bulb?” Act. Where else, but California?

“How many legislators does it take to change a light bulb?” It may sound like one of those “How many…” jokes, but it’s actually a proposed title for an act. The “How Many Legislators Does It Take to Change a Light Bulb” Act is focused on attempting to lower greenhouse gas emissions and combat global warming. But perhaps the real question should be: how many legislators will change a light bulb? One will, for sure: California Assemblyman Lloyd Levine is aiming to ban incandescent light bulbs by 2012. Probably because Uh-nold says so.

Look – I get it. Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFLs) are significantly more efficient. Comparable light for less energy consumption. Lower power usage. But do we really need MORE government dictating what we can’t do? No. No we don’t. I use CFLs everywhere it makes sense to in my house, but I chose that because it makes sense for me. Educate the masses and let them decide if they want to save money and reduce power consumption. Give tax breaks for CFL purchases. Subsidize CFL costs some other way. But don’t mandate. That’s just more government we don’t need.

When you try to hijack a plane, know the language of the pilot and passengers

I love it when a plan comes together. And this pilot pulled together a plan beautifully.

A fast-thinking pilot, with the help of passengers, fooled a gunman who had hijacked a jetliner flying from Africa to the Canary Islands, braking hard upon landing then quickly accelerating to knock the man down so travellers could pounce on him, Spanish officials said Friday.

. . .

Speaking to the gunman during the hijacking, the pilot realized the man did not speak French. So he used the plane’s public address system to warn the passengers in French of the ploy he was going to try: brake hard upon landing, then speed up abruptly. The idea was to catch the hijacker off balance, and have crew members and men sitting in the front rows of the plane jump on him, the Spanish official said.

Seems every once in a while, you do see bitching hard karmic payback. (via boingboing)

Hateful spew != Great rant

A co-worker sent me a link to what he deemed a “Great Rant” and I went ahead and read it. It’s a great rant in the same manner that Howard Dean’s opposition to President Bush was “Great Leadership and Politicing” I think. The poster of the supposedly great rant is angry, and feels that anger and spewing is equivalent to offering anything worth reading or listening to. Complaining vehemently about the Democrats plans for preventing the Iraqi was surge plan, the writer vomits:

You Democrats, with far too few exceptions, are a disgrace to the sacrifices made by our forefathers, and you have no business referring to yourselves as Americans. Since when is it the Congress’s mandate to run foreign policy, anyway?

If I’m getting my dates right, I believe the US Constitution was penned in 1789. And in the Constitution, we can find that “The Congress shall have Power…

Looks like people are still falling for the scams

Every once in a while, you’ll hear about someone doing something that YOU know far too much to fall for. This is such a tale. A tale of someone falling for one of the oldest online scams known (and the obligatory shorter link in case the original is broken).

The longtime treasurer of Alcona County in northeast lower Michigan has been removed from his job and charged with nine felonies for allegedly stealing county money to invest in the notorious online Nigerian Advance Fee Fraud Scheme, Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox announced today.

Thomas Katona, 56, was arraigned in Harrisville today after an investigation that began in December when county officials learned he had directed eight unauthorized wire transfers totaling $186,500 to beneficiaries linked to the Nigerian Advance scheme, Cox said in a statement. Investigators also found that Katona had wired $72,500 of his own money to the same accounts.

An audit of county books in December indicates a shortfall of $1.25 million, more than a quarter of the county’s annual $4-million budget, the Cox statement said.

So sorry to hear that. It seems once again the most gullible are penalized heavily for that. On the other hand, if this had been the one time the scam paid out, think what he could have done for the county treasury.
